    thoughts after a visit to the social assistance offices

    I went last week with some friends into the Ontario Disability Support Program office (ODSP) and the Ontario Works (OW) office. It was my first time being in the building. I was struck by the difference between the carpeted and better furnished ODSP office and the bare floored empty waiting room of the OW office, as though the very rooms themselves where meant to emphasis worth of one group of clients over the other. Clients on ODSP receive almost double the amount a person on Ontario Works receives, and they are not required to apply for job after job as a person on OW is. When the provincial government talks…

    Picture book round-up!

    I want to share some of the books we’ve been reading recently. One of the books is Zen Ghosts by Jon J. Muth. This book is part of a set of books all featuring a giant panda bear named Stillwater and three children. Each book introduces some aspect of the children’s lives – in this case the question of what Halloween costume one of them will wear – and then has Stillwater tell one or more stories that in some way relates to the children’s situation. The panda’s stories, based off of traditional Buddhist and Taoist stories, are not preachy one-answer-fits-all type of stories but rather a puzzle to think over. The Zen Ghosts story…
